Generally our duvets are constructed
in channels 6 inches wide, with 2 inch high baffles to eliminate cold spots. Heavyweight
duvets, designed for those whose body temperature is lower, have 8 inches wide channels
to provide space for 25% more down to loft up and trap air. We use channel construction
to make a duvet which can be used summer and winter, with the down evenly spread
in winter, and concentrated at the foot in summer.
Gravity gradually moves the down toward
the foot of the bed, but it can be readjusted in several ways.
- Turn the duvet end to end every
three or four days so the down moves back and forth on its own.
- Shake the down back down the channel.
- If there is a lot of down at one
end it tends to stick there despite shaking. Pat the down firmly, then stroke
it toward the emptier end of the duvet. The down will move ahead of your hand
to where you want it to be.
This last method is useful when one
partner is warmer. On that side of the bed, the down can be purposely shifted to
the foot. Another advantage of the channel construction is that every five
years the duvet can be opened, the fill removed and cleaned of dust, down added,
and the empty casing cleaned to ensure warmth and durability for years to come.
Click on the Down Facts button at the top of the page to read about the types of
down we use, which will help you to decide which duvet is best for your needs.

FEATHERBEDS
Featherbeds are widely
used in Europe, but more and more people in North America are discovering the comfort
of a mattress topped with a featherbed. It's like sleeping on a cloud! Feather Factory
feather/down beds are made with fully baffled channels that run across the width
of your mattress. We use a 20/80 down and feather blend to fill our featherbeds,
for a luxurious combination of softness and support. Your featherbed stays in place
with tuck-in flaps attached to the top and bottom edge. Simply tuck the flaps under
your mattress, slip on a fitted sheet, and you are ready to experience the luxury
of a Feather Factory feather/down bed.
